Abstract

The Global Environment Monitoring System (GEMS), currently involving the collaboration of 140 countries across the world, was conceived during the late 1960s within the wider context of growing environmental consciousness—and the availability of instruments and programs that could provide a truly global data set. Under the aegis of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), its mission is to collect and process data from transnational monitoring systems observing the effects of human activities on the environment and health. GEMS is based on the expertise and infrastructure of specialized United Nations (UN) agencies, and encompasses a number of scientific and professional communities.
