Abstract
The main purpose of this experiment was to test the hypothesis that Chevreuls Movement (CM) can be used to detect covert behavior (“read minds”). CM is defined as movement of a hand-held pendulum in a direction consistent with a subject’s thinking when the subject reports that he/she did not voluntarily attempt to move it. The “mind-reading” test consisted of having the subject hold the pendulum while thinking of one of three printed trigrams oriented in different locations beneath the pendulum. Results indicated that the pendulum moved in the direction of the trigram the subject selected on 46% and 68% of 15 test trials in two different groups. In addition, CM improved under standard training conditions and transferred to the mind-reading test. It was concluded that CM represents implicit in-terbehavior as discussed by Kantor (1933).
