Abstract
The structure of art as a symbol system is composed of three dimensions: observer, process, and product. In this paper, each dimension is described, discussed and its application to art therapy illustrated through presentation of a case study of a 12-year-old boy suffering from a progressive neurological disorder. It is argued that the structural aspects of art are integral to art therapy and facilitate the discussion and understanding of the function and method of art therapy.
