Abstract

A new method to design observers for a class of nonlinear systems is proposed. The main idea consists in decomposing the observer error system in a linear time invariant part and a nonlinear time-varying feedback. This last term contains the influence of the plant on the error equation. If the nonlinearity is dissipative with respect to a quadratic supply rate, then the linear part is designed to be dissipative with respect to a related supply rate, so that the closed loop is exponentially stable. This design allows for big flexibility in the possible nonlinearities, and includes and generalizes several standard observer design methods. The observer design is simple, since in many cases it reduces to the solution of Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMI).
