Abstract

Experimentally observed 14-MeV neutron removal cross sections are presented for 16 materials. At a scattering energy loss of 4MeV, the effective macroscopic cross section per unit mass (in square centimeters per gram) for a nucleus of mass A is given by 0.25A[sup [minus]1.78] + 0.10A[sup [minus]0.47]. Such information provides a simple method for estimating neutron transport in systems driven by thermonuclear neutrons.
