Abstract

Tāmalakī is an annual herbaceous plant which has been in use in indian traditional medicine from very early times. The same names were given to two plants of the same genus, Phyllanthus niruri L. and Phyllanthus urinaria L., which have the same properties and therapeutical uses. According to āyurvedic literature, tāmalakī is required for the preparation of many remedies which are said to cure fever, diarrhoea, jaundice and urinary diseases. Today Phyllanthus niruri L. is often taken alone as deobstruent and diuretic. A decoction of the plant is administred in jaundice; or the whole plant is crushed and its juice is given with milk morning and evening. Modern pharmacological studies of Phyllanthus niruri and some other species of Phyllanthus have resulted in the finding of a number of alkaloids. But the therapeutical effects of Phyllanthus niruri might be due to other substances and further experiments will be needed to test the action of the plant.
