Abstract

The microstructure of metals which have been deformed in a plastic manner has been studied with the electron microscope by a number of workers [see, for example, Heldenreich (1); Hirsch, Kelly and Menter (2); Hirsch, Horne and Whelan (3); Bollmann (4)]. Since it seemed possible that more information might be obtained if the specimens were deformed whilst under observation, it was decided to attempt to deform metal films in position in the electron microscope. An evaporation technique for preparing coherent single crystal films of gold in (111) orientation has been developed (5), and these are deformed in an apparatus which has been constructed as an attachment for the Siemens Elmiskop I.
