Abstract

The nesting behaviour of the small digger wasp Bembecinus hungaricus Frivaldzky 1876 was investigated over two years at dense nesting aggregations on sand dunes in Austria. Females successively provision one nest at a time with adult leafhoppers, mostly of the family Cicadellidae. Typical nests are simple and have a single cell with a volume of approximately 1cm 3 at the end of an oblique burrow at a median depth of 5,5 cm. When the wasps leave nests for hunting, the burrows are temporarily closed. Nest dimensions of two consecutive years are compared using statistical analysis. Burrow width, the borrow inclination, cell depth and cell length differ significantly.
