Abstract

SUMMARYThe development of the vesico‐urethral musculature was studied in human foetuses between 6 and 20 cm CRL.Three smooth muscular systems can be discerned: the detrusor muscle, the trigonal muscle system and the smooth urethral musculature. In the male the prostatic musculature develops independent of these smooth muscle tissues. The development of the striated urethral musculature is described.Comparing different stages of development in male and female it was found that the detrusor as well as the ventral urethral wall are essentially identical in both sexes and change little during development. The differences between the male and female urethra in the adult are caused mainly by developmental changes in the dorsal urethral wall.
