Abstract

The introduction of reactive dyes has significantly affected the established economic relationship between batch and continuous processing. Reactive dyes have properties which are suited to high‐speed continuous dyeing without the need for specialised equipment. On the other hand, conventional dyes, e.g. direct and vat dyes, are designed primarily for batch‐dyeing methods. It is found that the direct production costs for the continuous dyeing of reactive dyes are comparable with those for dyeing direct dyes on the jig or winch. This fact, coupled with the high wet‐fastness properties of reactive dyes, is likely to accelerate the growth of more productive dyeing processes throughout the world.
