Abstract
Experimental results are reported on the burning of free droplets of heptane and decane in oxygennitrogen atmospheres. The burning occurred in a freely falling chamber providing 2.2 sec of negligible gravity. Enhanced burning rates and a phenomenon of flash extinction were observed and attributed to thermophoretic buildup and ignition of carbon near the droplet surface.
