Abstract

Summary The status of forest soils and nutrition research and practice in Australia is reviewed from the point of view of a visitor to the Australian continent who has much expertise in these fields. Pertinent observations are made of the state of the art of forest nutrition, together with searching comments on such topics as soil fertility research, the need for soil classification, soil and plant analyses, the use of phosphorus and nitrogen fertilisers, second rotation research, micro element nutrition, and the communication of research results.
