Abstract

Six commercial kits, marketed for the purpose of determining plasma fibrinogen concentration, were evaluated. Four of the kits were quantitative and two were qualitative ( i.e. , distinguished normal from subnormal). The four quantitative kits were compared with a reference thrombin-clottable protein technic. The two qualitative kits were evaluated by their performance on plasma samples known to have normal and subnormal fibrinogen concentrations. Only one of the quantitative kits performed satisfactorily in both accuracy and recovery experiments. Only one of the qualitative kits determined a plasma fibrinogen value of 100 mg. per dl. or less to be subnormal. An analysis of kit package inserts and reagent cost per test is also given.
