Abstract

Polyelectrolyte complexes (PEC) have been prepared by mixing the cationic polymer poly(4-vinylpyridinium chloride) (P4VPHCl) with an anionic polymer containing neutral spacer groups, viz. poly[sodium (2-acrylamido-2-methyl propane sulphonate-co-N,N dimethylacrylamide)] (P(AMPSNaco-DMA)). Analysis of the precipitates showed that PEC contain approximately equimolar quantities of each polyelectrolyte. Similarly, conductometric and potentiometric titrations indicated that all titrations were approximately stoichiometric. Hence, departures from stoichiometry of PEC noted previously with P(AMPSNa) were eliminated via the incorporation of neutral spacer groups. © 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd
