Abstract

The occurrence of known cell wall constituents of yeasts, viz. yeast mannan, yeast glucan and chitin, in certain yeasts and some other fungi has been investigated using pure, chemically intact cell wall material and applying X-ray diffraction for the detection of chitin and yeast glucan. Considerable differences between the cell walls of certain yeasts and between those of certain other fungi have been established. Several new fungal cell wall components with characteristic X-ray diagrams have been detected.
