Abstract

Summary 1. Further observations are made on the occurrence of subtertian malarial infection in over 100 individuals associated with the intravenous administration of heroin. 2. The sigmoidoscopic appearances of a series of cases with symptoms of cases with symptoms of malarial dysentery are described, and remarks on the rapid healing of the bowel lesions under antimalarial treatment are made, this healing being observed through the sigmoidoscope. 3. Fractional test meals carried out on some of these malarial patients showed a high percentage of cases of achlorhydria, this condition persisting even during convalescence. 4. The result of treatment of these subtertian cases with various doses of plasmoquine and quinine is given in detail, special note being taken of the effect of this treatment in clearing the blood of malaria parasites. 5. The absence of any serious signs or symptoms of toxicity as a result of the use of plasmoquine and quinine is discussed. 6. Intravenous plasmoquine administration in eight cases is reported, no ill effects being noted apart from some fall in blood pressure. No special advantage, however, appeared to result from the employment of this route of administration.
