Abstract

A shoot of Spiraea salicifolia bears serrate leaves in a spiral sequence. The number of serrations on any single undamaged leaf margin can be counted without ambiguity. Let us define (Fig. i) left and right margins as seen from the adaxial side and let the numbers of serrations upon these margins be L and R respectively. These numbers have been recorded for several shoots from a cultivated clone, taking the counts for successive leaves along the stem. We will consider first the behaviour of the total (R -+ L).
