Abstract

LB-layers of tricosa-2,4-diynoic acid with a different degree of polymerization were prepared and the critical rupture thickness of wetting films on these systems was measured. The decrease of h crit with increasing degree of polymerization is related to a growing stability of the LB layers. In connection with results obtained on other hydrophobic surfaces (J. Mahnke, H.J. Schulze, K.W. Stöckelhuber, B. Radoev, Colloids Surf. A, submitted), we discuss the possibility finding a suitable relation between the hydrophobicity of a given surface in terms of the contact angle Θ and the critical thickness h crit. Such a relation was quite useful for flotation modelling, but our results make its existence at least doubtful.
