D. ; Hackwell, J. A. ; Briotta, D. Abstract Large-amplitude infrared light variations are reported for the peculiar infrared star CRL 3099. High-resolution 2.8-4.1-micron and 7.8-13-micron spectra suggest that CRL 3099 is a carbon star which is highly reddened by a dense circumstellar shell. Small graphite grains apparently are the primary opacity source for the circumstellar shell over the 4-20-micron spectral region. The grain temperature is about 360 K, and the shell optical depth is approximately 0.1 at 10 microns. It is suggested that CRL 3099 represents an advanced evolutionary stage which is characterized by the formation of large amounts of cool circumstellar dust and by large-amplitude bolometric variations in the central star. Objects similar to CRL 3099 may be a significant source of interstellar graphite.
