Abstract

The apparent resonant behavior of the elastic constants of certain materials have been observed and measured on a device which exerts axial dynamic compressional stresses in small samples. The effects of temperature and original internal stress condition on the resonant phenomena in samples of salts, metals, and polymers have been studied. Experiments to determine the nature of the stress pattern in the samples at resonance will be discussed. A theory based upon the motion of pinned dislocations in prestressed samples will be suggested as a possible explanation of this phenomenon.
