Abstract

Observations of neutron damage were made on BeO single crystals irradiated at pile ambient temperature. The crystals darkened during irradiation and often exhibited cracking parallel to the basal plane. Irradiation produced many small defect clusters in the crystals and caused a significant increase in their hardness. X‐ray diffraction photographs of irradiated crystals showed duplex reflections and continuous streaking between certain spots.
