Vrba, F. J. ; Coyne, G. V. ; Tapia, S. Abstract A polarimetric study of grains and magnetic fields in the R Coronae Australis dark cloud is presented. The magnetic field forms a pocket which follows the cloud contours smoothly. Star formation has occurred only at the bottom of the pocket at the point of minimum galactic plane gravitational potential. The mean ratio of total to selective extinction implied by the polarization observations is 4.47, with observed values for individual stars ranging from 2.8 to 6.3. Large grains are widely distributed throughout the cloud, and increase in size with increasing depth into the cloud. This is explained by the combined action of the cloud gravitational and magnetic fields on the charged grains. The rotation and star formation rates of the cloud are consistent with the magnetic field strength implied by the grain alignment scales. The general evolution of the cloud is controlled by the ratio of magnetic to gravitational energies.
