Abstract

The dynamic behaviour of a linear turbulently-heated plasma is studied using 70 GHz microwave scattering. Electrostatic ion waves with frequencies close to but lower than the lower hybrid frequency are intially observed around the periphery of the plasma column. It is found that these waves propagate towards the axis. The time-resolved wave number spectra, obtained for two frequency components from many scattering data for various scattering angles, show that the wave number at peak amplitude decreases with time, accompanied by broadening of the spectral distribution. Physical pictures corresponding to the observed results are discussed. It is also demonstrated that a phase-sensitive homodyne detection system can be used for measuring asymmetric spectra.
