Abstract

Introduction. The purpose of this letter is to bring to attention 30-Mc/s riometer observations taken during 1962 and 1963 at McMurdo Sound, Antarctica (79.1°S, 66.5°W geomagnetic), of events associated with solar cosmic rays. The station and the research objectives have been described in detail elsewhere [Goedeke et al., 1963]. The February 1962 event. At the beginning of operation of the 30-Mc/s riometer at 0700 UT, February 22, 1962, low level absorption was present. The absorption reached a maximum of 0.7 db at about 0800 UT, February 23, and returned to normal at about 2100 UT. According to Basler (private communication, 1963), the Thule riometer identified absorption during the period February 20–23.
