Abstract

Objective To analyze the effects of levetiracetam on fever onset frequency, recurrent seizures and epilepsy conversion in children with recurrent febrile seizures. Methods A total of 150 children with recurrent febrile seizures treated in the Second People’s Hospital of Datong from October 2013 to March 2016 were selected and randomly divided into control group and treatment group, with 75 cases in each group. Children in control group orally took sodium valproate, while children in treatment group received orally levetiracetam administration based on the treatment of control group. The fever onset frequency, recurrent seizures, epilepsy conversion and adverse reactions were compared between the two groups. Results The fever onset frequency in treatment group were (1.51±0.41) times, which was significantly less than (2.12±0.36) times in control group (t=-4.24, P 0.05). The rate of adverse reactions showed no significant difference between control group and treatment group (9.59% vs. 4.17%, χ2=1.25, P>0.05). Conclusions Levetiracetam tablets as oral treatment can reduce the fever onset frequency and recurrence rate of seizures in children with recurrent febrile seizures. And the treatment method is conductive to reduce their brain damage and improving their development of intelligence, resulting in improvement in their quality of life. Key words: Levetiracetam; Febrile convulsion; Recurrent seizure; Children; Epilepsy conversion
