Abstract

The electronic continuum observable by Raman scattering on the ab-plane of Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ single crystals has been analyzed for different polarization directions at room temperature and at 5 K. In A g - symmetry, a superconducting gap has been detected with an energy of 2 Δ ≈ 330 cm -1 (42 meV). The line shape of the electronic continuum for this symmetry is due to intraband electronic Raman scattering. The Blg - spectra reveal at low temperatures a nearly linear rise of the electronic scattering intensity from {fx01v} = 0 cm -1 up to {fx02v} ≈ 480 cm -1 , dropping off at higher frequencies, which can be interpreted in terms of interband scattering.
