Abstract

A magnetic field effect on the Q-branch spectra of the CH A2Δ–X2Π transition is investigated using a pure methane glow discharge plasma installed in a superconducting magnet. The polarization resolved high-resolution spectra are measured under magnetic field strengths of 1.5 and 4.0T. The observed spectra are in good agreement with the calculated spectra based on quantum mechanical perturbation theory taking into account the off-diagonal matrix elements of the effective Hamiltonian with respect to the rotational quantum number N. It is confirmed that the polarization resolved spectroscopy can enhance the accuracy in determining the magnetic field strength from the Zeeman splitting of the spectra.
