Abstract

It is shown that a laser oscillating in multiple longitudinal modes in a standing-wave cavity containing a Doppler-broadened medium exhibits a new dip in the intensity tuning curve in addition to the more familiar Lamb dip. The existence of this dip, which is due to a mutually-reinforced hole burning effect by multiple modes, has been verified both analytically and experimentally, the latter using a two-mode HeNe laser.
