Abstract

The authors have observed the transmission of CW CO2 laser radiation through liquid H2O at intensities I<or=2.5*106 Watts cm-2 that are sufficient to produce vaporization. Under these conditions, a focused CO2 laser beam propagates inside a self-induced hollow channel similar to a waveguide with a diameter comparable to the focal spot diameter at the surface of the liquid. The attenuation coefficient for 10.6 mu m laser radiation has been found to be about 7 cm-1, which is compatible with that calculated for propagation in a hollow waveguide in liquid water. The stability of this structure is discussed.
