Abstract

The local order is studied in silicon and germanium mullites Al 4+2 x M 2−2 x O 10− x ( M = Si or Ge) using high resolution transmission electron microscopy. A superstructure is observed for x = 0.5 and a structural model is proposed from image simulation. Images reconstructed after selecting the diffuse scattering located in the (010) reciprocal plane reveal short range ordered domains for compositions with a low concentration of oxygen vacancies ( x < 0.40).
