Abstract

Objective To explore the changes of comeal endothelial cell after phacoemulsification in cataract patients with high myopia by corneal endothelial microscope. Methods Cataract patients underwent phacoemulsification between November 2011 and September 2012 was divided into high myopia group (axial length ≧ 26.0mm) and control group (23.0 mm ≦ axial length <25.0mm).Routine examinations were done and the parameters of corneal endothelial cell including central corneal thickness (CCT),cell density (CD),average area of endothelial cell (AVE) and coefficient of variation (CV) were recorded by comeal endothelial microscope pre-operation and at three days, one month and three months post-operation.The data were analyzed by SPSS 13.0 statistical software. Results Sixty-three high myopia patients (80 eyes) and seventy-two control patients (86 eyes) were enrolled.Compared to control group, the axial length of high myopia group was significantly longer and the age was significantly younger (P <0.01).There were no significant differences of CCT and CV both pre-operation and each observation time post-operation between the two groups (P >0.05).CD and AVE pre-operation and at three days, one month post-operation in high myopia group were significantly different to those in control group (P <0.05).There were no significant differences of the percentage of corneal endothelial cell loss and percentage of increase in CCT neither at each observation time post-operation between the two groups (P >0.05).Compared to the data of pre-operation,CCT recovered to the level of pre-operation at three months post-operation in high myopia group and at one month post-operation in control group.CD was reduced and AVE were increased gradually until one month post-operation in both groups.CV was significantly different at three days post-operation in high myopia group (P <0.05) but was no significantly different in control group (P >0.05).Conclusions The damage of corneal endothelial cell after phacoemulsification in cataract patients with high myopia is similar to that in non-high myopia patients, but the corneal endothelial cell in high myopia patients is more fragile and the reparative process needs more time. Key words: High myopia; Cataract; Corneal endothelial cell
