Abstract
ABSTRACT Foreign objects have been observed in nests of ground nesting birds and have included such items as stones, driftwood, mammalian bones, and bottles. We discovered an American Oystercatcher (Haematopus palliatus) nest scrape containing a single, oblong stone while we were monitoring the nesting species from March to July 2015 off the coast of Citrus County, Florida. We report our observations of a pair of American Oystercatchers incubating this stone and discuss possible explanations for its presence in a nest scrape.
