Abstract
The structural study of four α-bromobutyrolactoncs in the solid state shows that they are all in an envelope. conformation, form a or b , scheme 1. Two of them, having only different configurations of the asymetric centers centers, of the side substituent R, exhibit the two invers conformation of the ring. The same inversion is observed by NMR in solution. This dramatic behaviour seems originated from a change in the conformation of R. The values of the dihedral angles of the form a appear quite invariable. In contrast, the form b is more flattened. Some other lactones, with an aliphatic R substituen are examied in solution.
