Abstract

Objective To determine the effect of adding n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in attempted suicides who were depression.Methods A randomized double-blind placebo-controlled 3 months trial comparing n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids versus placebo was conducted on 39 attempted suicides who were depression.Mood was assessed at baseline and then 1.5 and 3 months using the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression(HRSD)and the Beck Depression Inventory(BDI).Results 1.There were no significant differences between n-3 PUFA intervention group and control group on scores of HRSD at baseline and after 3 months intervention(23.52±6.92,21.56±8.71;14.62±9.28,12.00±8.54)(P>0.05).There were no significant differences between n-3 PUFA intervention group and control group on scores of BDI at baseline and after 3 months intervention(P>0.05).2.There were significant differences between n-3 PUFA intervention group and control group on EPA,DHA and n-6/n-3 at 2 points of time(P<0.05).Conclusion n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids were not effective as an add-on therapy for depression.
