Abstract

The paper explores some puzzling data on number agreement with disjunctive noun phrases in Russian. Specifically, it is shown that plural agreement can be blocked as a result of scalar implicature calculation. More generally, I propose that a sentence can be judged ungrammatical when it has scalar implicatures that contradict each other and that cannot be disregarded due to relevance or to the requirements of certain scalar items.
