Abstract

Postictal investigations may help to differentiate epileptic seizures from psychogenic seizures or syncopes. There are different measurements which can be done additionally to anamnesis: physical investigations (bite on the tongue?; Todd's paralysis?; enuresis/encopresis?), serum analysis (prolactin; creatine kinase) and EEG or SPECT. A bite on the lateral side of the tongue, encopresis or enuresis, Todd's paralysis and increased serum prolactin and creatine kinase levels are often seen following generalised tonic-clonic seizures. In 60% of seizures even after complex partial seizures of temporal or frontal lobe onset an increase of serum prolactin has to be expected. However, all these investigations may be without pathological findings even following tonic-clonic seizures.
