Abstract

This paper deals with an object-oriented design support system that provides the designers with intelligent support in basic design of machine tools. The basic design process of machine tools is analyzed through the interviews with experienced designers, and objects called design objects are proposed to support the basic design process of machine tools. The design objects include the design parameters, the models and the design criteria of machine tools and their components. A framework of the design support system is proposed based on the design objects and their relations. In the framework, the design objects are activated to design the basic structures of machine tools according to the is-a relations and the part-of relations in order to support the decision making process in basic design of machine tools. A prototype design support system for the basic design of machine tools, especially machining centers, has been implemented in PROLOG. It was shown, through case studies, that the methods proposed here is effective to support the design process of machining centers.
