Abstract
Objectivism, the philosophical system developed by Ayn Rand, has been a significant influence on libertarian thought, and shares themes and interests with self-professed libertarian schools of thought. This essay examines how Rand’s conception and defense of capitalism is rooted in her conception of objectivity, her morality of ethical egoism, her view that the interests of individuals do not conflict when they form their values objectively, her conception of rights as objective principles defining and sanctioning individuals’ freedom of action in a social context, and her recognition of the need to bring the use of force under objective control.
