Abstract

The political changes which had already taken place in Indonesia by 1951 could not but have created a new situation for the elite groups, whether old or new. This chapter focuses on a tour of Java in order to visit both them and the other, larger, towns and cities which are playing such a prominent part in modern Indonesian development. A sociologist’s or social anthropologist’s writings about a society, when it is altogether illiterate, are unlikely to cause its members embarrassment. Social scientist’s observations of social behaviour are restricted to what might be called public phenomena, to what he can observe of daily happenings in the streets, squares, and market-places. Private social behaviour he can observe only in such homes as he frequents, or at such ceremonies as he witnesses. There were few social activities in which to take part: they can adequately be summed up in the three words: badminton, tennis and dancing.
