Abstract

Objective gait analysis has become more accessible with the availability of small portable wireless inertial sensors that can be fixed to pre-defined points on the horse to measure upper body movement. Over the years a huge number of kinematic papers in the horse have been published but the terminology used is often complex and thus understanding of the data is diminished. This article aims to present the data generated by small, wireless inertial measurement units (IMUs) in a user friendly format and to demonstrate the potential for objective gait analysis to increase veterinary practitioners' ability to detect subtle and complex lameness.
