Obituary: Walter Wiora (1906–1997)

Abstract

With the passing of Walter Wiora at Feldafing on 8 February of this year, German and international musi-cology have lost one of their long distinguished senior scholars and elder statesmen. Born at Kattowitz in Silesia (now Katowice in Poland) on 30 December 1906, Wiora gained his initial professional musical and academic tuition in Berlin, as a student at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik and the Humboldt Universität, as well as subsequently at the University of Freiburg.
