Celso-Ramón García, Figure 1Celso-Ramón Garcia, M.D., 1921–2004. The William Shippen, Jr. Emeritus Professor at The University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, died on February 1, 2004, of cardiovascular disease at the age of 82 during a visit with his brother in New England. Best known for his pioneering work in the development of oral contraceptives, Dr. García was a widely acclaimed clinician and educator, also renowned for his innovative reconstructive pelvic surgery in infertile women. Very few of us in medicine have had, in the course of our lives, a lasting impact on society worldwide. Celso García is in that category.
