Abstract

ABSTRACT Based on the recently digitized estate of Ernst Akiba Simon (1899–1988) at the National Library of Israel, this essay analyzes selected obituaries in the context of biographical research. It reflects on opportunities, possibilities, and necessary conditions for perceiving digital data as more than representations of an analog system. Particular attention is paid to the following aspects. 1. How is Ernst Simon remembered today? 2. What are possible benefits of digital humanities’ methods. 3. How can institutions like the NLI and the research community lay the foundations for making digitized archives usable at the level of machine-readable data?
