Abstract

The UK has the second highest prevalence of obesity in the world. This is recognised to be the consequences of poor lifestyle choices, maladaptation to the modern environment, genetics and high levels of inactivity, causing many people to become overweight and obese. The rising tide of obesity leads to increased levels of type 2 diabetes as well as a whole host of largely preventable chronic disease, such as sleep apnoea, depression, hypertension, cancer, periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease. This article will focus on the context of obesity and current pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment of this complex multi-system disease.
