Abstract
Mexico is a country with a high prevalence of obesity in adults, reaching 36.9%1. Body mass index (BMI) linearly increases the risk of perioperative complications, such as atelectasis, obstructive sleep apnea, cardiovascular and thromboembolic diseases, among others. This situation highlights the importance of anesthesiologists being trained to adequately address the perioperative care of patients with obesity, since approximately one third of the population is in this category. Currently, there are multiple approaches to obesity management, ranging from lifestyle changes and surgeries for metabolic control and weight loss, to new generation medications, such as GLP-14 analogues. This has led to physicians from various specialties needing to update themselves on the mechanism of action and side effects of these new treatments.
