Abstract

Educational Administrative Ideals, which are really nothing but applied psychology, swing from one extreme to the other, like a pendulum, or like the business cycle. A century ago, when colleges were small and every teacher was intimately acquainted with every student, the student received his degree after having spent four years in college, provided he had not engaged in too many pranks antagonizing his teachers. But since the teachers did not want to acknowledge their personal sympathy or antipathy as being the decisive factor, they administered an ordeal which went under the name of a comprehensive examination before letting the student commence whatever was to follow.
