Abstract

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) has a low risk profile with complication rates reported as less than ten percent. Most complications occur around the time of the surgery, but scalp erosion typically presents in a delayed fashion. An erosion can expose the underlying hardware significantly increasing the risk of infection. If present, infection often requires the complete removal of the DBS system and therefore loss of clinical effect. Scalp erosions occur most commonly at the surgical cap site followed by the extension connector site.
