Abstract

The abuse of Anabolic Androgenic Steroids (AAS) has become a widespread use among professional and recreational athletes. They are used to improve their physical performance and body image. This article intends to review the Anabolic Androgenic Steroids (AAS) abuse and its clinical management in order to serve as a tool to aid in diagnosis of this potentially serious form of drug abuse. Studies published in Pubmed between 2000‐2013 were included in the review and also from The Journal of Family Practice, American Family Physician, Medicina Desportiva Informa and sites of Autoridade Antidopagem de Portugal and Diário da República. It is important that health professionals be aware, not only for the possible indicators of abuse and its negative health effects, but also its social context. There are other performance‐enhancing drugs that health professionals need to recognize its deleterious health effects.
