Abstract

Since from the beginning of 20th century, the Swedish economy suffered many transformations. From a country predominantly agrarian, with high levels of emigration, Sweden transformed itself in one of the most developed industrialized countries in the world. In this article, it is presented an historical narrative of this period. It starts with the beginnings of industrialization, at the final quarter of 19th century; then passes to the instauration of consensus between workers and employers unions (LO and SAF), which puts an end in conflicts and strikes; approaches the Rehn-Meidner plan, started in the 1950s and kept working until 1970, when the relationship between LO and SAF became conflicted again. During the 1980s, a neoliberal turn happens, bringing a deregulation of financial sector that causes a crisis in the beginning of the 1990s. We argue that the element of continuity between those periods is the welfare policy.
