Abstract

ON JEWISH LITERATURE IN NON-JEWISH LANGUAGES: AN INTRODUCTION The article is an introduction to a special issue of the journal Archiwum Emigracji devoted to Jewish literature written in non-Jewish languages. It briefly presents the sources of multilingualism of Jewish culture and characterises Jewish Diaspora literature as a “minor literature,” for it is: a) dispersed among various national literatures, b) trans-linguistic, c) highly sensitive to the problems of identity, difference, language, space, anti- or allo-Semitism, proper names and the heritage of the Holocaust. The author offers a general definition of this literature as a literary expression of autobiographic (i.e. subjectively expressed) Jewish experience in exile.
